In the German-Dutch INTERREG project TreeMania, led by GIQS e.V. as lead partner, many of the planned activities are in full swing. Appropriately, the lead partner has now launched the project website, which documents all activities and results. The website can be reached at www.treemania.eu.

TreeMania has already been running for more than a year and has set itself the goal of searching for and creating solutions for more sustainable urban development by mid-2022. Specifically, the project team will develop new and sustainable methods for the cultivation, care, arrangement and therapy of trees in urban areas – also with the help of digital sensors and tools. The activities will be carried out as sub-projects – so-called “pilots” – close to the border in the five partner municipalities Krefeld (D), Mönchengladbach (D), Maastricht (NL), Nijmegen (NL) and Weert (NL). At the end of this, the development of new and improved standard protocols for green space management in urban areas should be achieved.

In Krefeld, for example, pilots take place at Ostwall, Rheinstraße and at the Platz der Wiedervereinigung. In Mönchengladbach there are pilots at Schmölderspark and Franziskanerstraße. Among the Dutch partner municipalities, a pilot is being carried out in Maastricht at the Vrijthof, in Nijmegen activities are taking place at the Raadhuishof and in the Valkhofpark. And in Weert, two pilots are running at Kazernelaan and in the city centre at the corner of Langstraat and Maasstraat. These are both locations where trees have to cope with difficult growing conditions – be it due to heavy development, poor soil quality or consequences of climate adaptation. The activities focus on soil improvement measures. TreeMania also works with innovative sensors and is thus active at the interface between sustainable landscape management and digital technology. However, new tree species are also being planted to better cope with the existing environmental conditions.

On the new project website, all pilots are presented individually and the respective local peculiarities and the corresponding approaches to solutions are discussed. This will be supplemented with photo and video material of the respective locations and activities and will be continuously updated. In addition, the concept developers who are responsible for the preparation and implementation of the pilots will be introduced. As soon as the first results are available, these will also be presented on the new website.

TreeMania is implemented under the INTERREG V A programme Deutschland-Nederland and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Innovation, Digitalisierung und Energie NRW and and the provinces of Gelderland and Limburg. It is accompanied by the programme management of the euregio rijn-maas-noord.
