Participants of the MarkiT project meeting

At the MarkiT project meeting on 29 March 2017 in Lüttow-Valluhn, Fleischwerk EDEKA Nord GmbH provided the participating project farmers and partners with exciting insights into the processing of the NORDfrische Center after slaughter. All participants were able to observe the further processing of the project pigs and the data acquisition for meat quality measurement.

After the factory tour, Dr. Julia Steinhoff-Wagner from the Institute for Animal Sciences at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn presented the results of the hygiene monitoring of the pilot plants. The MarkiT project farmers then discussed the results and measures and gave a self-assessment of the assessment results. Sandra Erdmann, Animal Welfare Officer at Fleischwerk EDEKA Nord GmbH, presented the first results of the investigations into the meat quality of MarkiT pigs.

In addition, Nina Purwins from the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development of the Georg-August-University Göttingen presented the current state of research on consumer perception & consumer acceptance of vaccinated pigs with Improvac as well as the report of the first farm inspections. The farmers exchanged their experiences and used the opportunity to discuss their questions and suggestions with the invited expert.
